School Excursions

The Living Museum at Addison Road is a fascinating and flexible resource for the schools of the Inner West and beyond. A nine-acre site with a mix of open space and more than 30 heritage buildings, it features a seven-stop self-guided Heritage Trail available throughout the year.

Alternatively, schools may book a guided tour and/or special activities. Home to numerous community organisations and artists, the Addison Road Community Centre Organisation runs several programs that may be visible on any given day, such as the weekly Tucker and Land Justice Food Pantry, or composting in the community garden. Teacher-led groups should book ahead of time, to be informed of any planned events or activities that might enhance (or hinder) their visit.

A Museum visit offers both formal and informal learning opportunities, allowing students to touch, see and experience aspects of the past and the present, and to explore issues and ideas in both planned and unexpected ways. In addition to its direct connections with the new NSW Syllabus History and Geography content, the Living Museum at Addison Road offers potential as a resource for English and Creative Arts learning, and for building cross-curricular skills such as literacy, communication, research, inquiry, empathy and analysis. Special activities that relate to history, art, environment or social justice may be booked by arrangement with the Centre. Also, from May 2016, support materials such as ‘object boxes’ and oral histories will be available for use on site or in the classroom. Please contact us to discuss the design and costs of your school’s visit.

Facilities include: parking for buses and coaches; disabled access toilets; public liability insurance of $20 million; risk assessments; indoor and outdoor lunch/ break areas. Centre facilities may also be available for follow-up events such as exhibitions, performances or presentation evenings.
